The Monroe County Backpack Blitz and School Supply Drive is an effort that has been spearheaded by community members at local churches in partnership with The Salvation Army in Bloomington. The Backpack Blitz serves students grades K-12 throughout Monroe County.
Every school year, students throughout our community eagerly fill new backpacks with school supplies for the academic year to come. However, for many families, the excitement of a new school year is met with anxiety: the costs for school supplies averages to more than $50 per student.
In 2018, approximately 602 students Kindergarten – 12th grade throughout Monroe County were alleviated of this anxiety through the Monroe County Backpack Blitz and School Supply Drive. Churches throughout the community and The Salvation Army of Bloomington have teamed up since 2010 to collect school supplies and distribute stuffed backpacks to families that register with The Salvation Army to receive a backpack.
This will be the second year the program includes supplies for high school students who can request backpacks through their high school guidance counselor. Families interested in registering a student grades K-8 for a backpack and school supplies should contact The Salvation Army at 812-336-7593 the week of July 22, 2019.
