In September 2025, Sanctuary Indy, a local non-profit organization focused on housing the unhoused, and Lynhurst Baptist Church announced that they had partnered up to develop affordable micro-communities housing for chronically homeless individuals on the church’s land located on South Lyndhurst Drive near West Washington Street in Indianapolis. The project plans to start with six (6) tiny homes, roughly 350 square feet each with a goal of adding duplexes and a community center as well. This is considered phase 1 of the project, completed by December 2025. The project also plans to construct ten (10) duplexes, phase two of the project, on the same property completed by the end of 2026. The plan also includes access to childcare, transportation, recovery programming, and food pantries to add additional wrap-around services to the residents.
On October 13th, 2025, roughly a dozen concerned neighbors of the project’s location attended a public meeting to express concerns about the tiny homes being built in their neighborhood. Some of the residents shared concerns such as: that the housing may perpetuate additional crime in the area, safety concerns regarding the children in the church daycare, and concerns over things being brought onto the premises that shouldn’t be there to name a few examples of what was discussed during the public meeting.
In conclusion, as of October 15th, 2025, the six (6) tiny homes and ten (10) duplexes projects have received zoning approval from the city government.
This article will be updated as news develops moving forward on the project.
